Connection Ireland/New York
Identity and Migration in Maeve Brennan and Frank McCourt
Keywords:
autobiography, literature of migration, Irish literatureAbstract
It is a reflection on the insertion of the works of the writers Maeve Brennan and Frank McCourt in the scope of Literature of Migration studies. Their work can be studied within this field both in due to their emigration from Ireland to the United States and because they constructed migrant characters inspired by their living in New York, to where many Irish people went in the first half of the 20th century. The article also analyzes the influence of Irish history in autobiographical aspects in the works of both authors. Brennan resonates the Irish liberation from the United Kingdom, and McCourt the Great Famine and the migratory diaspora who followed it. In addition to being a writer, Brennan was a journalist, and produced 42 short stories and a novel focusing on female loneliness. McCourt worked as teacher and wrote autobiographies in which humorous narratives highlight the tragedy of Irish poverty exploited by both the United Kingdom and the Catholic Church.
