A narrativa do Ulysses
cronos, kairos e o esmaecimento do afeto

A proposta de Frank Kermode para o entendimento da estrutura narrativa em termos de uma dupla temporalidade, a primeira entendida enquanto cronologia do tempo que passa (cronos), a segunda enquanto uma ruptura do fluxo temporal que remete a um tempo de revelação extraordinária (kairos), abre caminho para uma leitura do Ulysses em uma dimensão que é mais espacial do que temporal. Trata-se de leitura marcada pela dispersão espacial de significados que devem ser recompostos por um leitor que se dedica mais à montagem de um quebra-cabeças do que a uma leitura propriamente dita. Nessa forma alternativa de leitura, as epifanias típicas das obras iniciais de Joyce, marcadas que são pela força emocional do kairos, tendem a perder força ou mesmo desaparecer. Essa perda de força kairética, que tem para Kermode um significado existencial, pode ser produtivamente compreendida em termos da conceituação proposta por Fredric Jameson sobre o “esmaecimento do afeto” na pós-modernidade.
