Para uma jovem “que escreve” no início do século XX na Inglaterra, Henry James é uma presença inescapável e incômoda, caracterizada por ambivalências – artífice x artificioso, adulterador das convenções inglesas x conjurador da velha ordem não muito distante –, um artista cuja marca da diferença não lhe escapa: o americano, ainda que não por inteiro. Por meio dos escritos de Virginia Woolf sobre Henry James, vemos uma escritora consciente da tradição, mas buscando formas mais atentas às novas exigências históricas do material. Como sugere este artigo, suas reflexões iluminam a especificidade representacional de cada um e, talvez, sem que ela perceba o alcance de certos comentários, sugerem correspondências profundas entre o realismo e o modernismo, entre antigas experimentações e inquisições contemporâneas.
