O estudo a seguir tem como objeto a comédia de sujeito romana, a fabula togata ou comédia em uma toga, analisada de um ponto de vista principalmente histórico, enquanto destaca, no entanto, o caráter de inovação e ruptura que pode assumir em comparação com a comédia grega.
