O objetivo deste texto é discutir o filme O banheiro do Papa considerando as diversas linguagens narrativas que o compõem: o discurso histórico, referente à visita de João Paulo II a Melo, cidade uruguaia; o discurso jornalístico, resultante da cobertura da visita do Papa; o diálogo intertextual com o livro de contos de Aldyr Garcia Schlee, O dia em que o Papa foi a Melo, e com o filme de Vittorio De Sica, Ladrões de bicicleta. Embora separados no tempo, na história e na geografia, propomos a discussão do filme latino-americano de modo a ressaltar o diálogo intertextual com Ladrões de bicicleta, chamando a atenção para as ressonâncias de elementos narrativos (personagens, temáticas, conflitos) e questões sociais e éticas entre os dois filmes.
