Abstract: This article presents selected works by six women playwrights that were active during the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s, and explores the images of submission, conformity, revolt, and rebellion that these women have put forth in their writings. The objective is to analyse the reasons that led to the removal or deletion of these works from the theatrical canon and position the act of translation as a way to expand this canon and to reformulate what we read, stage, and study in Brazil about American Theatre.
Keywords: women playwrights; American theatre; translation and feminisms.
