The article presents a reflection on the development of modern poetry in its contradictory relationship with the public arena of political commitment. Emphasizing the specificities of the European avant-garde in the 1910s, whose radical and innovative procedures would question the autonomy of the artistic form, the article contrasts a Futurist poem, in which Filippo Marinetti celebrates war itself as a “work of art”, and a Dadaist poem, in which Hugo Ball seems to express, through meaninglessness, the disaster produced by the First World War. Finally, composing a comparative triangle, the article analyzes a poem by Mário de Andrade, from Há uma gota de sangue em cada poema, to show how the then immature Brazilian writer outlined a unique position in the field of the arts at the beginning of the 20th century.
