The article presents a reading of the novel A falência, by Júlia Lopes de Almeida, focusing on the way in which the novel articulates the notion of labor in the period immediately after the Slavery Abolition. In this sense, the trajectory of the protagonist couple is understood within the relationship between labor and betrayal. Furthermore, the positioning of the characters in the Brazilian colonialist social structure of the late 19th century is observed according to their possibilities for work and social advancement in terms of gender, class or race. The economic implications, the capital and risks of violence involved in marriage are then examined from the perspective of the main female characters and in dialogue with feminist approaches.
