Does Anyone Ever Read Miss Edgeworth’s Novels?

Virginia Woolf deemed Jacob’s Room (1922) her first experimental novel. This deliberate break with realism’s hereditary practices and conventions is often associated with the trauma of the Great War. My reading of Jacob’s Room, however, foregrounds direct and indirect allusions to the ever-growing political violence in Ireland, a country Woolf would visit only in the 1930s. Moreover, I discuss thematic and constructive affinities between Jacob’s Room and a novel by an Irish writer whom Woolf avowedly despised: Castle Rackrent (1800), by Maria Edgeworth.
