O texto concentrar-se-á na leitura e seriação levada a cabo por Borges de Figueiredo a partir do poema épico Os Lusíadas (1572), de Luís de Camões. Discute-se a amplitude flexional que o autor atribui ao macro-conceito “geografia” e suas implicações, que antecipam um conjunto de perspetivas modernas a propósito daquela atividade – e aspiram a transformar categorias como “espaço”, “lugar”, “paisagem”, “itinerário” ou “deslocamento”, num elenco de potencialidades hermenêuticas de interação e conformação mútua, resgatando-as do seu sentido clássico enquanto elementos meramente disponíveis para apreciação e tradução simbólica. O estudo de Borges de Figueiredo (publicado em 1880) será assim descrito como instância de antecipação de uma noção de “geografia” que se vem a tornar plenamente operativa apenas no século XX, mediante um esforço radical de reordenamento do campo.
