O objetivo deste artigo é discutir como a ficção de crime, considerada uma forma menor de literatura até o século XX, pôde adquirir um certo status canônico. Perrone-Moisés (1998) descreve a variação do cânone literário conforme o tempo, o espaço e a cultura. Albuquerque (1979) e Priestman (2003) traçam um histórico da ficção de crime, enquanto Marcus (2003) indica como esse gênero tem sido classificado e interpretado em estudos acadêmicos. Miller (1956) resume a produção de elogios paradoxais na Inglaterra. Esse panorama nos permitirá examinar quatro ensaios de Chesterton (1901, 1920, 1925, 1930) sobre a ficção de crime e discutir aspectos epidíticos dos artigos reunidos em O defensor (1901). Nosso objetivo é mostrar como a defesa da ficção de crime por Chesterton contribuiu com a crítica literária voltada para esse gênero, ao mesmo tempo em que abre perspectivas para a compreensão de sua obra ficcional e não ficcional.
