This article discusses the readings and interpretations of James Joyce's novel Ulysses (1922) by Ernst Robert Curtius, Carl Gustav Jung and Hermann Broch at the end of the Weimar Republic, i.e. in the context of the rise of Nazism in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s. The aim is to put part of the German-speaking reception of Ulysses in perspective and thus draw attention to an episode that seems to be relevant to the history of international modernism. It is argued that the extraordinary novelty and scope of Ulysses stimulate in these three readers, along with admiration, a feeling of anguish, which demands a critical approach that deepens and reverses the negative aspect of the novel, as a way of confronting the malaise of the time.
