Guidelines for interpreting drawings
improving the approach toward children in dental offices

One of the main benefits for the dental care of children is the building of a relationship of trust with the dentist, thus rendering the knowledge of the child’s psycho-social development essential. Drawings of human figures contain a rich source of information, reflecting an individual’s interaction with the environment. This study aimed to draft guidelines to interpret children’s drawings related to dentists in an attempt to use these drawings in dentist’s approaches toward children in dental offices. The sample included 43 children from public and private schools in the city of João Pessoa, PB Brazil, between the ages of 7 and 12, who created drawings related to their understanding of a dentist. The interpretation of the drawings was performed independently by two examiners. After, the Kappa coefficient was applied to verify the level of agreement, which obtained an optimal Kappa value (0.88). By and large, the dentist’s image was drawn in a positive light. The guideline proposed to interpret the drawings is an easy-to-use auxiliary method for dentists which is used to obtain additional information about the perception children have of dental treatment, thus enabling a better approach toward the patient during dental care and helping to formulate a better patient-dentist relationship.
