The social representation of oral heath in adolescents

The aim of this article was to better understand the social representation of oral health in a group of pre-adolescents from an at-risk region in Belo Horizonte and who receive support from a local charity. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with ten pre-adolescents, between the ages of ten and twelve, for a qualitative analysis of data. Five main themes were selected from the interviews: the significance of their home, the role of health, the role of oral health, tooth decay, and the dental services offered. It could be observed that the pre-adolescents had a good notion of their social reality and knowledge of the difficulty of access to oral health services. This fact appears to be of great importance in recognizing and valuing the services offered at the institution. However, this study also revealed an inconsistency in the representation of oral health. Although the pre-adolescents see good oral health as clean and white teeth, they refuse to recognize tooth decay as a disease, mainly due to the improbability of seeing their own teeth in a healthy state. The valued and desired professional profile for these pre-adolescents is directly linked to the patient-dentist relationship. The pre-adolescents maintain representations that are intimately related to their social realities.
