Abstract

The aim of this study was to understand young athletes' conceptions about the values of Olympism, as well as their learning and experience contexts, centered on participation in the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games. To this end, we conducted semi-structured interviews and observations of athletes in different spaces and moments of the event. Although there is no systematized consensual definition of Olympism, athletes declared a range of values that are proclaimed in elaborations on Olympism, whether in the academic or institutional field. Furthermore, the athletes stated that they learned about these values through different influences, such as idols, friends, parents, coaches, managers and even the delegation and the National Olympic Committee. They also expressed that they carry out the values of Olympism in all contexts of their lives. It was then inferred that young athletes understand Olympism as a philosophy of life.
