The representation of women in classical Jewish texts varies according to context, alternating between moments of civic and religious participation and others of restriction and control. At times, women circulate in public spaces and take part in ceremonies and functions; at others, they are segregated or subordinated to a hierarchically superior man who limits their social and ritual agency. This study analyzes biblical legislation and its oral interpretations, focusing on how the themes of blood and ritual purity give rise to prohibitions that cyclically confine women to private and secluded spaces, thereby restricting their legal and religious personhood.
