The article analyzes A estranha nação de Rafael Mendes by Moacyr Scliar (1983), which reads like a reconstruction of historical facts that begin as a family saga. In this novel, Scliar focuses on the immigration of the Sephardim since the discovery of Brazil around 1500. The present text shows that the novel constructs a Jewish memory in which memories of the history of Jewish immigrants converge with the economic and political development of Brazil.
