Sephardim in Aruba
Rescuing a History (18th-19th Century)

The history of the Sephardim who lived in Aruba from the mid-18th century to the last quarter of the 19th century is little less than unknown. Some authors have briefly and partially touched upon this group. This article is a first attempt to address their history, presenting the context in which the migration from Curaçao took place, the main figures, their development as merchants, the uniqueness of the group, and their gradual disappearance. It concludes that Aruba was not accounted for as a life project for these migrants; rather, it was a place to do business and accumulate capital, which then migrated to the Latin American mainland or returned to Curaçao. The non-Community parentages contributed to the weakness and disappearance of the group
