Abstract

Concept maps constitute a type of Knowledge Organization System (KOS) widely used to represent relationships among concepts through propositions. However, the formulation of these propositions is often affected by recurring problems, such as the absence of predicates, the use of verbs with inadequate valency, and the employment of vague or semantically ambiguous relations, which compromise the representational quality of concept maps. In this context, the present study aims to propose guidelines for the formulation of semantically expressive propositions in concept maps, with emphasis on metalinguistic control and the terminological standardization of linking expressions. This theoretical-conceptual study adopts a qualitative approach and is based on a literature review and an analysis of the semantic structure of propositions in concept maps. As a result, a set of guidelines for constructing semantically structured propositions is presented, along with a proposal for a controlled vocabulary of linking expressions organized into relational categories. The adoption of these guidelines enhances semantic precision, terminological consistency, and representational coherence, contributing to the improvement of concept maps as instruments for knowledge representation, organization, and information retrieval within the field of Information Science.
