Abstract

This paper undertakes an analysis of the song Preciso aprender a só ser (1973) by Gilberto Gil, evincing the links established by him between his composition and the song Preciso aprender a ser só (1965), by Marcos and Paulo Sérgio Valle. Through the analysis of the lyrics, the harmony and concepts from intertextuality studies, we seek to understand how Gil operated on these structures, aiming to replace the 'being alone' (ser só) for 'just being' (só ser) in different levels of the song. Preciso aprender a só ser is also construed in the context of the symbolic show Gilberto Gil presented at USP in 1973, in order to contextualize the song from the socio-political reality inherent in the presentation.
