Abstract

The Portuguese archives and libraries constitute a true and underexplored treasure of the European musical heritage. In spite of the destruction, due to the 1755 earthquake, of the spectacular music library put together by the King D. João VI, there is much to discover. One immediate proof is Giovanni Battista Pergolesi´s Mass in D Major for Five Voices and Instruments, which may contribute significantly to the studies on this controversial composer of the early eighteenth century.
