Teaching academic writing at distance at UFMG

Abstract

In the present report, we describe the work that has been developed in teaching and learning of academic writing at distance at UFMG. We show how the course “Oficina de Língua Portuguesa: Leitura e Produção de Textos”, which has been offered for over a decade for undergraduate students of the university, is planned and executed. We also present the results obtained with this course through the evaluations made by the students who attended to it in previous semesters, and we point its perspectives for the future. At last, we discuss briefly the role of distance education at the university, and we point out the major challenges we still face. We believe that this report may be useful for the dissemination of the work that has been carried out in the university, showing that distance education can be done with quality, and still have a great potential to be developed.

Carla Viana Coscarelli, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Belo Horizonte, MG, Brasil.

É professora titular da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG. Tem mestrado e doutorado em Estudos Linguísticos pela UFMG, pós-doutorado em Ciências Cognitivas pela University of California, San Diego e pós-doutorado em Educação pela University of Rhode Island. Trabalha há mais de uma década com o ensino de escrita acadêmica a distância e faz pesquisa sobre leitura, produção de textos, ensino e letramento digital.

Luana Lopes Amaral, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), Belo Horizonte, MG, Brasil.

É professora de Língua Portuguesa da Faculdade de Letras da UFMG. Fez mestrado e doutorado em Estudos Linguísticos e, mais recentemente, pós-doutorado na mesma universidade. Tem experiência de pesquisa na área de semântica e tem trabalhado, desde que ingressou na UFMG, com o ensino de escrita acadêmica, em disciplinas presenciais e a distância.
