Abstract

The objective of this work was to get to know the different approaches to families by mental health as found in the mental health scientific literature. It is a review study which selected 16 articles from national and international journals, gathered from the LILACS database between 1999 and 2005. The articles were divided into the following themes: transformation of healthcare into mental health and lack of assistance to the families; families and individuals in psychic suffering; families and mental health care and Family Health Program and Mental Health. The literature has examined the importance of care for the family, in the context of the psychiatric reform and the consolidation of this reform in the Brazilian context.
