Abstract

This article proposes to analyze oil and its multiple implications for global governance. Oil is the main strategic energy input of the planet, capable of driving nations to prosperity or even to armed conflicts. Is it possible to think of an approximation between the management of oil in the international arena and the broader discussions about the conception of horizontal, participatory and democratic internacional spaces? In this direction, the paper seeks to investigate the trajectory of oil as a global energy commodity and its impact on contemporary economics and politics. The article ́s hypotesis is based on the assumption that energy and oil governance have been centered not only on market rules, nationalism and realistic calculations of power, but on effective possibilities of international cooperation and mutual gains.
