Editorial Guidelines for the use of Artificial Intelligence

This document aims to establish integrity guidelines for academic writing that respect the ethical commitment to fundamental rights, to the Journal of State Sciences, and to the scientific community. The criteria established were determined based on the Policy of Integrity in Scientific Activity of CNPq.

1 Conditions for Submission: 

1.1 For Authors

The Journal of State Sciences does not condemn the use of Artificial Intelligence, provided that the critical exercise of the text is elaborated exclusively by human intelligence. The use of AI or GAI tools may occur only in an auxiliary capacity, and must not replace the reflection, scientific interpretation, and argumentative responsibility of the authors.

Authors must assume full responsibility for their own work, as well as ensure transparency in the practices of good scientific conduct regarding the originality, authenticity, credibility, and accuracy of the information used.

Any use of such tools must be expressly declared, and does not exempt authors from responsibility for factual errors, plagiarism, non-existent references, or other ethical violations. Human supervision of the submitted text is indispensable for evaluation and publication in the Journal.

Authors must include a footnote at the beginning of the text declaring the use, or non-use, of AI or GAI, as follows:

A declaration of ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools is mandatory. Where applicable, this declaration must specify the platforms used and their respective purposes. Namely: language and style assistance, data analysis and collection, or text formatting.

Thus, upon submission, authors must agree to the ethical commitment guidelines and the prohibition of using AI for: generating substantial text; manipulating or artificially generating scientific images without explicitly declared methodological purposes; and listing AI tools as co-authors. Non-compliance with these rules constitutes scientific misconduct, and offenders are subject to sanctions ranging from immediate rejection of the manuscript to public retraction of the article and notification of their affiliated institutions.

1.2 Standard Footnote Examples: 

The footnote disclosing the use, or non-use, of Artificial Intelligence must be inserted at the beginning of the text, linked to the article title. It should appear only in the version corresponding to the article's primary language.

1.2.1 Ethical commitment to the Journal and its AI/GAI policy:

"It is hereby declared that this manuscript was prepared in accordance with REVICE's guidelines on the use of artificial intelligence tools. Any AI resources employed during the preparation of this text were used in an ethical, responsible manner and in accordance with the standards established by the journal, always under the supervision and review of the authors, who assume full responsibility for the submitted content."

1.2.2 Ethical commitment disclosing tools and their uses:

"In the preparation of this article, the tool (tool name, version) was used for the purpose of (specific purpose). All content produced with the assistance of the tool was subjected to review and editing by the authors, who assume full responsibility for the accuracy, integrity, and content of the submitted manuscript."

1.2.3 Declaration of non-use of Artificial Intelligence

"I hereby declare that no Artificial Intelligence tools were used in the preparation or bibliographic research of this article."

2 Conditions for Procedures:

2.1 Peer Reviewers 

The evaluation of manuscripts, the completion of review forms, and the preparation of analyses, critiques, recommendations, revisions, and suggestions to authors must be carried out exclusively by human reviewers, so as to ensure the exercise of critical, reflective, and independent judgment. The use of Artificial Intelligence tools may occur only in ancillary and instrumental activities, such as grammar correction and spell-checking, provided that it does not replace the intellectual analysis of the reviewer or interfere with the formulation of the review or editorial decisions.

2.2 Editorial Board

When suspicions or inconsistencies arise, the editorial board is responsible for verifying compliance with the guidelines regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence and for reporting misconduct by authors and reviewers. It is the responsibility of the Editor-in-Chief and Associate Editor-in-Chief to make appropriate decisions on a case-by-case basis.

Editors reserve the right to use AI tools for plagiarism detection activities and the production of audiovisual materials.

3 Validity:

This guideline will take effect under the following conditions:

3.1 For 2026

In the next issue of the Journal (v. 11, n. 2, 2026), authors are requested to indicate, by means of a footnote linked to the article title, whether or not Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) tools were used in the preparation of the manuscript. In this edition, the indication is advisory and aims at academic transparency, and does not yet constitute a mandatory requirement for publication. 

3.2 For 2027

As of 2027, the inclusion of a footnote in the submission file indicating the use or non-use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) will be mandatory, under the penalties previously described.
