Abstract

This paper analyzes the installation Envueltos by Uruguayan artist and professor Francesca
Cassariego, initially presented in 2023 at the Contemporary Art Space of Montevideo,
and some of the works from the Mátria Livre series by Brazilian artist Marcela Cantuária,
developed since 2016. Drawing on approaches linked to global history and in dialogue
with studies of visual culture, it seeks to bring the contemporary productions closer
together. Therefore, the political dimension of the artists’ works is highlighted, which
mobilize questions related to the memories of dictatorships in Latin America, focusing on
the Brazilian experience from 1964 to 1985. In this sense, it is understood that Francesca
Cassariego and Marcela Cantuária work towards the construction of anti-dictatorial
memories in the field of contemporary Latin American art, promoting aesthetic-political
reflections on the effects of authoritarian impositions on society.

Author Biography

  • Guilherme Susin Sirtoli, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul

    Professor e Pesquisador. Licenciado em Artes Visuais (2019) com período de mobilidade acadêmica na Universidade de Aveiro (2019), Bacharel em Museologia (2024), Especialista em Artes (2021) e Mestre em Artes Visuais (2022) pela Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Doutorando em Artes Visuais na área de concentração História, Teoria e Crítica de Arte pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em Artes Visuais da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (PPGAV/UFRGS). Doutorando em História pelo Programa de Pós-Graduação em História da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (PPGH/UFPel) com bolsa pelo Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). Servidor Público, atuando como Professor de Arte na Prefeitura Municipal de Caxias do Sul. Pesquisador e vice-líder do Núcleo de Memória e Contravisualidades (UFPel/CNPq). Sócio Honorário da Associação Estação Viva, freguesia de Canelas e Fermelã, Estarreja, Portugal. Seus estudos recentes incluem investigações na área de História da Arte, História do Tempo Presente, Arte e Política, Arte e Educação, Cultura Visual, e Educação Museal.
