This article presents and discusses three art exhibitions, known in Brazilian art history as “Salão de Maio”, which were realized in the 1930s, in São Paulo. The purpose of this analysis is to debate art criticism published in the newspapers of the period about these exhibitions. These events had a key role in Brazilian art, because it promoted a new debate about international art movements, such as surrealism and abstract art, which were presented at the second and the third editions of the event.
