The mechanics of books

This article presents and discusses the theoretical and methodological bases for the material analysis of bibliographic documents. Firstly, the article identifies the discursive fields in which the bookbinding history is constituted, emphasizing the influence of formalistic disciplines devoted to the material analysis of texts. Then, after conceptualizing and discussing the gestures and practices underling the book three-dimensionality, the work focuses on the three mechanical systems that characterized the printed book, highlighting the moment of the systematization of the use of paper as a support. Finally, the article presents a methodological solution for bibliological analysis and places it in perspective with the graphical document conservation practices.
