Abstract

This paper discusses the subject of soil as a co-productive agent in artistic practice and methodological approach, according to the artistic production of Onya McCausland (1971-) and Daro Montag (1959-). In this context, the matter’s performance contributes not only to the aesthetics and reading of the work, but is also inseparably related to the concept underlying it. Opposing the concept of matter as a tabula rasa subordinated to the inscription of external purposes, it is seen here as variable and full of its own flows, resistances and tensions. The artistic production that makes up the work is therefore understood as a process of co-response, correspondence and co-authorship between artist and matter, rather than a pre-defined visual and aesthetic imposition.
