Abstract

This article explores the explicit representation of homosexuality in 12 late plays by Tennessee Williams, written between 1970 and 1983, works completely unpublished in Brazil. To do so, it takes into account the historical, social, and cultural context in which they were conceived: the counterculture, the alternative theater scene off and off-off-Broadway, the emergence of gay theater in the US, and the rise of conservatism in the Reagan era, and its detrimental consequences. This analysis reveals another side of Tennessee Williams, both in terms of his known style in Brazil and the themes addressed, highlighting the urgency of LGBTQIAPN+ issues by portraying their realities and the essential structure of American society
