Gothic horror and monstrous desires in contemporary Brazilian queer cinema

Abstract

Through comparative film analysis of a constellation of short and feature films from contemporary Brazilian cinema, this article aims to explore how the horror genre is used by a new generation of queer filmmakers as a way of representing dissenting sexual desire. Based on queer readings about Gothic horror, this text will analyze the recurrence of blood in these narratives as a metaphor for abjection and desire, as well as the positive appropriation of monstrosity and its implications in the panorama of audiovisual productions that address homosexual desire in Brazil.
