Expression and self-expression in the artistic creation
a dialogue between Nise da Silveira and Susanne K. Langer

This article will investigate, from a dialogue between Susanne K. Langer and Nise da Silveira, the problem of artistic expression. It will first examine the philosopher’s perspective, whereby the work of art does not proceed from the artist’s emotional overflowing. Next, it will review the psychiatrist’s references on the theme, which fluctuate in the understanding of the artistic creation either as self-expression or as a non-symptomatic expression. Finally, it will analyze some works by Silveira’s clients that seem to surpass self-expression. Therefore, it will be possible to sustain Langer’s hypothesis and apply it to the “images of the unconscious”. That application impacts not only on the artistic recognition of those images, but also on the human valorization of their creators.
