Abstract

This text provides biographical information about Maria Lúcia Godoy, a soloist from Minas Gerais who has achieved international fame and is recognized for her performances in recitals and audio recordings of the Art song genre. Her artistic career also encompasses literature, with the artist having published children's books and maintained a weekly column as a columnist for over a decade in the
newspaper Estado de Minas. An honorary doctorate from UFMG, Maria Lúcia Godoy turned 100 in 2024, having worked professionally for seven decades. The information in this work was based on the Master's dissertation from SABETI (2020), and celebrates the artist's centenary as a standard-bearer of Brazilian art song.

Author Biographies

  • Penha Vasconcelos Sabeti, Federal University of Minas Gerais - UFMG (Brazil)

    She holds a PhD in Music Performance, a Master's Degree in Music Performance/Singing from the Graduate Program in Music (PPGMUS) at UFMG and a Bachelor's Degree in Singing from the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE). She studied lyrical singing with renowned teacher Neyde Thomas and was also instructed by Marília Vargas, Lilian Assumpção, Mauro Chantal, Márcia Rangel and Eliane Chagas. Since the beginning of 2013, she has been a contracted member of the Minas Gerais Lyric Choir. In 2012 and 2013, she won the III and IV Young Soloist Competitions held by the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra. She was a soloist in the operas: Dido and Aeneas, by Henry Purcell, in the role of Dido, and Don Giovanni, by W. A. Mozart, performed in England, in the role of Dona Elvira. She also performed excerpts from the opera La Traviata, by G. Verdi, in the role of Violetta and was one of the soloists in Beethoven's Fantasia Choral, with OSMG and CLMG. She has performed in the operas: The Scientist, by Silvio Barbato; Fedra and Hippolytus, by Christopher Park; Madame Butterfly, by G. Puccini; Un ballo in maschera, by G. Verdi; Lucia Di Lammremoor, by G. Donizetti; Romeo and Juliet, by C. Gounod; Carmen, by G. Bizet, among others. 

  • Angelo José Fernandes, State University of Campinas - UNICAMP (BRAZIL)

    Angelo José Fernandes has distinguished himself with great success for his dedication to vocal music and singing pedagogy. A musician of diverse possibilities, he develops a broad artistic and pedagogical activity as a conductor, pianist, singer and singing teacher, and is constantly invited to perform concerts and give workshops, masterclasses and lectures in various Brazilian states. He is a lecturer at the Music Department of the Arts Institute of UNICAMP, a university where he is responsible for significant artistic and academic production. He teaches lyrical singing, directs the Contemporary Choir of Campinas (first place in the 2nd UC Choral Encounter, in Chile, on December 1, 2024) and the UNICAMP Opera Studio, as well as coordinating the CIDDIC - Center for Integration, Documentation and Cultural Dissemination. As a researcher, he was awarded a CNPq post-doctoral scholarship and has dedicated himself to the study of vocal technique in the practice of solo and choral singing in the various historical periods and styles of music composed for voice and its application in current performance.
