Abstract

Based on the dialogue between History and Literature, the objective of this article is to analyze the work Macunaíma, the hero without any character, written by Mário de Andrade in 1928, trying to understand how the intellectual makes use of his literary project of homogenization of culture to think about the Brazilian identity. The main interest is to perceive how literature helps to understand the discourses existing in society in the 1920's around the construction of national identity, since, when discussing the Brazilian national character in Macunaíma, Mário de Andrade resorted as much to racial debate and myths around miscegenation and tropical nature, themes that are quite recurrent in this period, as to the analysis of Brazilian culture and psychology.
