Abstract

In the year that marked two decades of the Proclamation of the Republic - and 21 years of the abolition of slavery - the Federal Capital was the scene of bloody scenes: in the midst of a demonstration, two medical students were murdered by plainclothes military police. The case became known in the press as the Blood Spring and caused great mobilization among the population. In order to understand the dimensions and possible meanings of this case and its consequences, this article analyzes the information about the case published by the four main newspapers in Rio de Janeiro: Jornal do Brasil, Correio da Manhã, Gazeta de Notícias and O Paiz. From this, we seek to discuss popular participation and a possible exercise of citizenship, as well as the role of the press in this case.
