Between stages and arenas: the dynamics of the circus in Ilhéus at the beginning of the 20th century
Abstract
The text aims to analyse the diversity of entertaining, cultural, artistic, and leisure activities in Ilhéus, Bahia, during the 1920s, with a specific focus on the presence of circus companies, using the newspaper Correio de Ilhéus as the main source. The research highlighted the presence of travelling circuses in the city and, in addition to revealing traditional circus attractions such as tightrope walking, acrobatics, and juggling, it showed that the circuses performing in the city included physical activities and theatrical displays. It was possible to identify that circus performances in Ilhéus contributed to charitable causes and fostered community sociability. Additionally, the influence of the hygiene movement was noted, promoting the integration of gymnastics and health within circus performances.
