Criminal proceedings and amusements of residents from small rural settlements in Western Minas Gerais (19th century)
Abstract
Research on the history of amusements in Minas Gerais usually have as starting point the
end of the 19th century, focusing on the analysis of some supposedly more sophisticated sociabilities,
enjoyed by sectors of the elite from larger and with more intense urban dynamics cities. This scenario
can be explained by both theoretical reasons and documentary limitations. In order to expand the state
of knowledge on the subject, this research describes and interprets the historical dynamics of
amusements for residents of small districts and rural villages in the western region of Minas Gerais,
covering almost the entire 19th century. The main sources used were criminal proceedings filed at the
Oliveira Courthouse, with the first occurrences dating back to 1823, extending until 1900. The records
are available in the digital archives of Universidade Federal de São João del-Rei.
