Abstract

This article investigates the influence of Thomist – and Aristotelian – thought on the intellectual justification of social stratification in Portugal during the 16th and 17th centuries. Through the analysis of the Tratado dos Estados Eclesiásticos e Seculares by Diogo de Sá and Regiminis Reipublicae Christianae by Batista Fragoso, the study explores how these works justify inequality among men based on original sin and virtue.
