Abstract

This article aims to analyze the information available in the engraving entitled Genealogia regum Portugalliae, published in 1592, treating it as an effective visual communication instrument in its time. On June 19, 1580, D. Antonio, prior of Crato, was acclaimed king in Santarém. The acclamation was followed by some villages and cities in the kingdom. D. Antonio led his supporters in a resistance against the Castilian army commanded by the Duke of Alba, being defeated in the battle of Alcântara, on August 25, 1580. In exile, while he circulated through the courts of France and England, several apologetic papers were produced in favor of his cause. The engraving can be understood from this perspective.
