Abstract

This article investigates how symbolic and narrative elements of the Middle Ages have been appropriated by right-wing extremists in contemporary times, with particular focus on the cases of Anders Behring Breivik (Norway, 2011) and Brenton Tarrant (New Zealand, 2019). Both perpetrators of terrorist attacks employed medieval imagery and references - such as the Knights Templar, the Crusades, and the idea of Christendom in conflict - to construct an aesthetic of holy war and ideologically legitimize their violent actions. The analysis falls within the field of neomedievalism studies, understood as the anachronistic, selective, and politically oriented appropriation of the medieval past, detached from any commitment to historical accuracy. Through the examination of the manifestos published by Breivik and Tarrant, as well as the symbols present in their actions, the article demonstrates how medieval imagery is mobilized as a tool for radicalization, identity reinforcement, and the dissemination of xenophobic, Islamophobic, and Eurocentric discourses.
