Comunicação Diplomática e Predação Marítima: o saque à embarcação dos Ximenes d’Aragão nas correspondências entre a Inglaterra e a Toscana durante os conflitos anglo-hispânicos (1595–1596)

Resumo

Corsários ingleses capturaram um navio na rota Lisboa-Livorno em 1595, resultando em negociações diplomáticas entre o Grão-Duque da Toscana e a Coroa Inglesa. O primeiro requeria um salvo-conduto e a restituição da carga, enquanto a rainha Elizabeth I alegava que os proprietários, os Ximenes d’Aragão, eram súditos da Espanha – portanto, alvos legítimos no conflito contra a União Ibérica. Assim, o artigo desenvolve um estudo de caso sobre esse episódio, com foco na comunicação diplomática entre Inglaterra e Toscana, a partir de cartas consultadas em coleções impressas e repositórios digitais, como o Medici Archive Project e o British History Online. Esse artigo integra o debate sobre a gestão de conflitos marítimos na modernidade e os resultados colaboram demonstrando como a diplomacia poderia ser usada para reaver perdas e reduzir os riscos da predação marítima, indicando que a posição geopolítica da Toscana contribuiu para mitigar os riscos de navegação dos Ximenes e negociar compensações por danos, embora descortine também suas limitações.
