Time and power in the expectative of the Last Judgment in Mercurino de Gattinara's Oratio Supplicatoria (1516)

The difficulty in creating an adequate conceptualization capable of providing lenses for the historical understanding of the thinking of Emperor Charles V's chancellor, Mercurino de Gattinara (1465-1530), is considered by historiography to be one of the obstacles to the study of this historical figure. In this sense, the present work aims to investigate what is often placed in separate categories in Gattinara's thinking: his political thinking of a universal monarchy and his prophetic-millenarian thinking. Thus, this paper aims to understand the relationship between these two aspects of his thinking based on how they derive from the same common notion: the constant expectation (and at the same time non-realization) of the Last Judgment.
