Abstract

The aim of this paper is to think about material culture as a perspective for the Brazilian 19th Century studies. The post mortem inventories are the primary source of this research, and allow us to understand how social networks were improved and contributed to the development of Cajazeiras, Paraiba State, Brazil. In this paper the analysis is related to the inventory of Francisco Beserra de Sousa, in 1884, a wealthy man whose patrimony gives us tracks to know more about its past and the people who were important to the City at that moment. The description of his assets, as the relation established with others, citizens or foreigners, are a challenging issue for the historians. The family heritage gives us a privileged perspective of the material culture, the material life and the meanings of it to that city and its social and political life.
