Abstract

This article discusses Veja magazine as a device of biopolitics, in which knowledge-power relations that seek to produce subjectivities intersect. The investigation consists of examining covers-reports published in the 1980s that deal with biopolitics, that is: (1) in managing and defending the population from possible threats and dangers, (2) promoting their well-being and providing a better quality of life and, (3) establish what are normal and abnormal habits in society. Thus, the article starts from the perspective that the mentioned theme is linked to a pedagogical and performative journalism, that is, journalistic statements that seek to discipline behavior and produce compliant behavior in its readers-population. The promotion of biopolitics carried out by Veja will be analyzed from the perspective of the concept of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, as well as his notion of device. Both categories allow us to problematize Veja magazine as a network of statements that seek to maintain, prolong and manage the life of the population.
