Abstract

In this article, we discuss the role of the Society of Jesus in the Arts of Healing, considering the assistance provided by missionaries in the region of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay, in a corporal but also spiritual way. We present the production in the fields of medicine, medical botany and surgery, covering the collections, books and the manuscript Libro de Cirugía. We believe that, in the contact zone in which Jesuits, indigenous people and other agents worked, a mestizo medicine was produced as a result of the colonial experiences of the Platine region. In the analysis of the Jesuit medical-surgical production, we look at tumors as a delimitation to think about the knowledge and practices used in treatments, resulting from a multiplicity of agents.
