Abstract

This article aims to analyze the murder of Annita Levy by her husband, the writer João Pereira Barreto, in 1912, a crime that became known as “The tragedy of Icarahy”. Considering that the murder of a woman resulted in the acquittal of the accused, this article also examines the female condition in the First Republic. The case is included in the so-called “crimes of passion” that became a social concern at the beginning of the 20th century in Brazil. In view of this, the condemnation of João Pereira Barreto before public opinion and the popular press is discussed.
