Abstract

In this article we aim to analyze the discursive materiality of the ideological advertisements that are presented in the film The Purge: Anarchy (2014) to produce meaning effects in relation to the purgatory policy instituted in the United States where, once a year, within 12 hours, any crime becomes legal. The intention is to start from the analysis of two speeches presented in the film, one issued officially in the media, signed by the entity NFFA (New Founding Fathers of American) and the other transmitted by streaming by the social activist Carmelo. Based on this dichotomy, we will analyze how discourses have different production conditions and how the effects of meaning produced by mediatization tried to act in the social imaginary. As a result, starting from a Discourse Analysis derived from the discussions of Patrick Charaudeau and Eni Orlandi, it was possible to observe how the propaganda issued by the NFFA sustained and reproduced wills of truths anchored in memory in an attempt to legitimize a genocidal policy, and how the speech of Carmelo offers a reaction based on the search for legitimacy.
