Abstract

In this article, the concept of crisis in the History of the Peloponnesian War of Thucydides is analyzed. The focus is on showing how the Greek historian, when reporting the war, draws a picture of crisis, which is sustained through experiences taken from different temporal dimensions (past, present and future). First, war is critical because it cannot be compared to similar events in Greek history (past). Then, social and natural phenomena destabilize the entire conceived social order (present). Finally, the break of expectation regarding death and the constancy of human nature undermine the modes of experience (future). In each of these parts, an idea in the Greek language linked to the concept of crisis is analyzed, seeking to complex the characterization of this phenomenon in the work of Thucydides.
