Abstract

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the city of Recife has undergone major urban transformations, due to the introduction of new techniques and urban plans in search of getting closer to the European modernity that had been established in cities like Paris. These urban transformations have an impact on society's daily relations, which was no different in Recife with the implantation of electric trams in the city in 1914. Thus, the objective of this work was to identify the impacts of the implantation of electric trams in Recife at the beginning of the 20th century. In order to carry out this research, newspaper notes and personalities' reports were taken as historical sources, in order to identify the socio-spatial transformations that occurred in Recife due to the implementation of the tram as a modernizing technique, as well as the population's perception of these transformations.
