Abstract

The Maurício de Nassau bridge is one of the most important in the city of Recife and the oldest among them. In its secular existence, acted not only as the main link between the central neighborhoods, but also as a diffuser of commerce, a stage for religious festivities, an administrative control center and a witness to the urban experiences of individuals who travel through city spaces. In view of this, we highlight its symbolic and material role of composition and attempt to modernize the urban landscape of Recife in the first decades of the 20th century. Analyzing this context, through the uses of the past, it shows a facet of this modernity: how it dialogues with European centers and regional characteristics. In this case, it is a matter of engaging in a dialogue between distinct temporalities and their idealizations that feed back into the composition of the urban space.
